How to start a build with Dusty
Published on
Ask Dusty to create a model from an existing plan, then adjust it with follow-up requests. A connected AI model can work on designs those plans do not cover.
Dusty can create models from Sawdust's existing plans, including platform beds, shelving, sawhorses and raised garden beds. Send a message describing what you want to make, then ask for changes to the result. This guide covers working with Dusty; a connected AI model can also use the chat to develop designs beyond those plans.
1. Open a project and its chat panel
You can start with an empty project. Type your request in the chat and send it. The project name is only a label; naming a project "Bookcase" does not ask Dusty to build one.
2. Describe the build and its dimensions
Say what you want to make and include any measurements or materials you have already chosen. For example:
- "Build a frame for a king bed."
- "Build a bookcase 6 feet tall."
- "Make a raised garden bed 8 feet long and 4 feet wide, using 2x10 boards."
You can use feet and inches or metric measurements, and write in your preferred language. For example, "Uno scaffale alto 180 cm" asks for shelving 180 cm tall in Italian.
If you are unsure which designs are available, ask "What can you build?" Dusty lists its plans and gives example requests.

3. Check the model and ask for changes
Check the model and Dusty's reply to see what it made. To adjust it, send another message, such as "Make it 20 cm wider." See How to resize a build with Dusty for the difference between setting a dimension and changing it by an amount.
If Dusty says it has no suitable plan, you can connect an AI model to develop the design using Sawdust's tools. See When to connect an AI model for the differences and setup options.
