How to use parametric procedures

Published on

Open My Shop -> Procedures, adjust dimensions or target parts in the parameter form, inspect the live 3D ghost preview, and click Add to build.

A procedure in Sawdust is a reusable, parameterized construction recipe. Some procedures generate a complete multi-part assembly such as a sawhorse, picnic table, or geodesic dome, while others machine a detail such as a pointed end or tenon onto an existing board in your scene.

1. Choose a procedure from My Shop

  1. Open My Shop -> Procedures in the left panel to browse built-in and saved procedures.
  2. Click a procedure card (such as Sawhorse or Point one end) to open its parameter form.
  3. Set the dimensional inputs (such as Width, Height, and Spread) and lumber profiles, or pick a target Part from the scene when the procedure modifies existing stock.
  4. Orbit the 3D scene to inspect the translucent ghost preview from multiple angles before committing.
My Shop Procedures catalog listing reusable procedures including Point one end, Sawhorse, Picnic Table, and Geodesic Dome.
Sawhorse procedure form with Width 36", Height 30", Spread 15", Top 2x4, and Legs 2x4, showing the translucent sawhorse preview in the 3D workshop.
Point one end procedure form targeting a board's right (+X) end with a 45-degree half-angle and showing the mitered ghost preview on the workpiece.

2. Commit to the build and inspect the expanded steps

When the ghost preview matches what you want, click Add to build. Sawdust expands the procedure into standard stock additions, saw cuts, and placements in your build history.

Because the committed result is regular project geometry, you can click any generated member to open its part inspector, launch Show me how, or step backward through the timeline to see every cut the procedure performed.
